SSAWW Prize for Best Paper Presented by a Graduate Student at SSAWW 2009

SSAWW is pleased to announce competition for the best paper presented by a graduate student at the Fall, 2009 SSAWW conference.

All submissions should include:

The paper presented and the name of your panel. You are welcome to revise the paper, but please don’t go over 2500 words. Please note that this is different from the recent award announced by Legacy; this award brings recognition and a monetary prize, but no publication consideration.

SSAWW 2009 "Getting Around Philadelphia" Brochure
On behalf of the SSAWW Local Arrangements Committee, Welcome to Philly! We have prepared a booklet that will be available at the Conference; in the meantime, we wanted to give you a “heads up” on activities you may want to plan before arriving at the Conference.
If this is your first visit to the City, you’ll probably want to take in “The Biggies”: Independence Hall National Historic Park, the Liberty Bell, and the Visitor’s Center. Please be aware that tickets are required for entrance to Independence Hall and may be pre-ordered at www.recreation.gov or 1-877-444-6777. Tickets are free, but get yours early so you can schedule a tour time.

Our brochure will list more museums and activities of interest; in the meantime, the Philly Visitors and Convention department offers a comprehensive overview of the city and ongoing events at http://www.philadelphiausa.travel/

One of our favorite special October events is The Eastern State Penitentiary’s “Terror Behind the Walls,” the largest haunted house in the U.S. and the only haunted attraction held in a prison. Tickets are required and the tours fill up quickly, so it’s recommended that you order tickets before arriving at the Conference. The Penitentiary, a fantastic gothic pile of rubble built in 1829, is also open daily for regular daylight tours, and those admissions can be purchased at site. http://www.easternstate.org.

Philadelphia has an efficient, multi-modal public transportation system; moreover, attractions such as Independence Park are within pleasant walking distance of the Sheraton. The train/subway/bus system is called the Southeastern Pennsylvania Transit Authority (SEPTA) and covers all of Philly proper as well as suburban areas. SEPTA trains also provide access to Delaware, Maryland, Washington D.C. and New York City trains.

The Philly Phlash, an above-ground bus system, is also a good (and inexpensive) way to get around the

$100 travel grants for graduate students

The Society is pleased to be able to support graduate students at our 2009 conference with $100 travel grants. This grant will be available to those grad students who registered by our early registration deadline of September 25 and who are presenting at the conference (i.e., on the program). You will receive your checks when you pick up your registration information at the conference. You are the future of our scholarly endeavors, and we look forward to welcoming you in Philadelphia.

We ask that those fortunate enough to have full support from their home institutions decline the reimbursement so that we can offer support to as many people as possible; if you have such funding, please notify Melissa Homestead (mhomestead2@unlnotes.unl.edu)

New event added to program – Saturday lunch open to everyone.

The Margaret Fuller Society, the Catharine Maria Sedgwick Society, and the Harriet Beecher Stowe Society are sponsoring a lunch open to everyone on Saturday, October 24th, from 12:15-1:30 p.m. The informal agenda will include discussion of collaborative activities among our societies and others, past and future—bring your appetite and your ideas!

The societies are subsidizing the lunch, which will be $10. We are also pleased to offer a limited number of free lunches to graduate students.

Lunches will be boxed, and they consist of a tuna, turkey, or vegetarian sandwich; chips; cookie; fruit; soda or water.

If you would like to attend the lunch, please register for it on the registration site. If you have already registered for the conference, you will be sent an email shortly telling you how to add this item to your registration.

Interested in displaying your recently published book at the conference?

The Society for the Study of American Women Writerss has arranged with The Scholar’s Choice to manage the combined book exhibit for our annual meeting taking place October 21-24 in Philadelphia, PA. It will be possible for your recently-published books to be included in their display. Please refer to their guidelines below:

“Any members interested in having their book displayed at the upcoming SSAWW meeting should contact their publisher as soon as possible. Please keep in mind that the publishers pay a fee to display with The Scholar’s Choice and may not have the marketing budget necessary to honor all requests, particularly for older titles. Reservations from the publishers will be accepted on a first-come, first-served basis, so reserving early is highly recommended. Please note that The Scholar’s Choice displays on behalf of the publishers and ALL requests must come from them, not the author. The person who handles reservations at The Scholar’s Choice is Debby Pitts. Your publisher may reach her at djpitts@scholarschoice.com or at 585-262-2048 x.108.”

Conference Hotel – Rates Have Been Lowered

We are pleased to announce that the Sheraton Society Hill Hotel has lowered its conference rate to $179/night. If you have already reserved a room for the conference, your rate has already been changed.

We appreciate that the Society Hill recognizes the challenging travel budgets that many of us are facing for the upcoming academic year.

Thinking local?

This year, we are excited to be organizing a “regional networking lunch” from 12:15 to 1:45 on Friday, the 23rd.

One purpose of the lunch is for participants to learn about how people from various regions of the US (and international participants, if interest is evidenced] can organize their own regional study groups. It will also be a great opportunity for people to meet scholars with similar interests who live in their area and brainstorm a number of ways to create meaningful, more local communities in an age of environmental concern and budgetary constraints.

The lunch is supplemented by the conference and will be $15 for regular members and $10 for graduate students, retired faculty members, and independent scholars. Look for a place to sign up for it on the registration form.

The Program Committee has finished evaluating the proposals for our 2009 conference. Carolyn Sorisio has contacted all panel organizers and individuals to inform them of our decisions. If you have not received information about your proposal and you were part of a proposed panel, please contact your panel’s organizer first and then contact Carolyn Sorisio if you need additional information. If you have not heard about an individual paper proposal, please contact Carolyn Sorisio (csorisio@wcupa.edu). Please remember that in order for your name to appear on the program, you need to be a member of SSAWW by the end of May, 2009.
